Some site updates

Motivation

Basically I wanted a new look for the site, the retro-style visual design just didn’t please me any more, the motivation to create new posts (besides a significant lack of time) slowly dwindling (actually some unfinished posts just await finalization). So, some changes seemed inevitable.

What’s new

• New color scheme based on a blueish tone (base color RGB #2876BA)
• New feature icons based on Phoenician letters (Aleph, …)
• New background and title images
• Removed Orwell’s quote from sidebar - reality simply went far beyond his (and my) imagination 🤮

Some Details

Looking through my own photographs in search for a suitable background image, nothing really turned up. But NASA’s APOD (Astronomical Picture of the Day) came to the rescue. Thank you NASA for all the beautiful pictures that you put in the public domain! Background picture was (as in the past) compressed using Google’s guetzli JPEG compressor.

Outlook

Being aware that the version of the ZZO theme used as the basis of this site cannot easily be updated due to all the modifications done over time and that the current version of the site is no longer compatible with recent versions of Hugo basically means that a future version of this site must be based on either a current version of ZZO or a different theme. In preparation of the recent update a few possible themes have already been identified, yet I decided to focus on (finishing) posts and postpone the introduction of a new theme.
